Berlin Bridge Days 2027: The Brückentage Worth Booking
Every September the same message goes around Berlin offices. Put next year's leave in the shared calendar before the end of the month. It takes ten minutes, most people fill it in from memory, and those ten minutes quietly decide what the whole next year feels like.
For 2027 that matters more than usual. Berlin has ten public holidays, which is at the thin end for Germany, and one of them is close to a Berlin exclusive: 8 March has been a public holiday here since 2019 and only Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has copied it. Four of those ten land on a weekend in 2027. Only six fall on a working day, and every one of the six happens between 1 January and 17 May.
So the good windows are small, they are all in the first half of the year, and they are decided in a spreadsheet in September, not in a mood in April.

Why 2027 is a worse year than 2026
A public holiday only buys you anything if it falls on a day you would otherwise have worked. Berlin's ten holidays are fixed dates or Easter-linked dates, so every year the calendar reshuffles them, and 2027 reshuffles them badly.
These four are gone before you start:
Labour Day, 1 May 2027, is a Saturday.
German Unity Day, 3 October 2027, is a Sunday.
Christmas Day, 25 December 2027, is a Saturday.
Boxing Day, 26 December 2027, is a Sunday.
That leaves six on working days: New Year's Day on Friday 1 January, Women's Day on Monday 8 March, Good Friday on 26 March, Easter Monday on 29 March, Ascension Day on Thursday 6 May, and Whit Monday on 17 May. For comparison, 2026 gave Berlin seven working-day holidays. 2027 gives six, and packs all of them into nineteen weeks.

Berlin bridge days 2027: what each window actually costs
A Brückentag, a bridge day, is a working day you buy because it sits between a holiday and a weekend. The German word is worth knowing because it is what your colleagues will call it in the calendar, and because the arithmetic behind it is the only part that matters.
Here is what each 2027 window returns for a five-day working week:
Ascension, Friday 7 May. One leave day, four days off. The best deal in the year by a distance.
Women's Day week, Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 March. Four leave days, nine days off, and Monday 8 March is free either way. It is a working day in fourteen of the sixteen states, so it is also the window nobody outside Berlin is competing for.
Easter, Monday 22 to Thursday 25 March. Four leave days, ten days off, running 20 to 29 March.
Easter, Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April. Four leave days, ten days off, running 26 March to 4 April.
Whitsun, Tuesday 18 to Friday 21 May. Four leave days, nine days off.
Christmas, Monday 27 to Friday 31 December. Five leave days, nine days off, and no help at all from the two Christmas holidays.
Add the four strongest of those together, Women's Day plus one Easter week plus Ascension plus Whitsun, and thirteen leave days buy thirty-two days off. The planner below draws all of it on the real 2027 calendar, so you can set the number of days you actually have and see what is left after each choice.
The one true bridge day is Friday 7 May
Ascension Day 2027 falls on Thursday 6 May, so the Friday after it is the single cheapest day in the year. One day of leave, and you are off from Thursday morning to Sunday night.
Four days is the exact size of trip that works from Berlin without an airport. Lübbenau and Lehde in the Spreewald are about an hour and a half by regional train. Szczecin is roughly two hours. Early May is also the point where the Brandenburg water starts being pleasant instead of theoretical.
My advice: put 7 May in the calendar first, before anything else on this list. It is the one date where you cannot do better with the same day spent somewhere else in the year, and it is also the date the largest number of your colleagues want.

The Berlin school calendar decides who gets the good days
This is the part almost nobody plans for, and it is the reason the obvious windows fill up before you open the spreadsheet.
Under section 7 of the Bundesurlaubsgesetz, your employer has to take your leave wishes into account, with two exceptions written into the law. One is urgent operational needs. The other is the leave wishes of other employees who deserve priority on social grounds, which in practice usually means colleagues with school-age children. When two of you want the same week, that clause is why you are the one who moves.
Now look at where the Berlin school year puts those children in 2027:
Winter holidays, 1 to 6 February.
Easter holidays, 22 March to 2 April. Both Easter windows sit inside this.
No classes on Friday 7 May. The Ascension bridge day is already a school holiday.
Whitsun holidays, 18 and 19 May. Two of the four Whitsun leave days.
Summer holidays, 1 July to 14 August.
Autumn holidays, 11 to 23 October.
Christmas holidays from 22 December.
Read that against the list above and the picture is uncomfortable. Five of the six windows sit inside a Berlin school holiday. The exception is the Women's Day week, 9 to 12 March, which is an ordinary school week. It is the least contested nine days in the year, and it is the one nobody asks for.
Whitsun in May, and then nothing
Whit Monday is 17 May 2027. Taking Tuesday to Friday after it gives you 15 to 23 May, nine days off for four leave days. A parent whose children are already off on 18 and 19 May reaches the same nine days for two, which is worth knowing before you argue about it.
Mid-May is the good half of the Brandenburg year: Potsdam before the summer crowds, the lakes warm enough to swim in, the regional trains still half empty. A Brandenburg day-trip ticket covers most of it.

Then 228 days with nothing on them
After Whit Monday on 17 May, the next Berlin public holiday that falls on a working day is New Year's Day 2028. That is 228 days, from 18 May to 31 December 2027, with no free weekday at all.
Which changes how I would spend the second half of the year. There is no clever booking to make, so the answer is plain weekends done properly: an early train out on a Saturday, Tempelhofer Feld at seven in the evening, a lake on a Sunday. If you want one artificial long weekend in that stretch, buy a Friday in late September, when the light is still good and the water is still warm.
The one date worth marking anyway is Sunday 3 October. It is a public holiday you get nothing from as an employee, but the city treats it as one, which means shops shut and the centre fills up.

Christmas 2027 costs a full week
Both Christmas holidays fall on the weekend in 2027, which is the worst possible arrangement. To be off between Christmas and New Year you have to buy the entire week, Monday 27 to Friday 31 December, five leave days, for a stretch running from 25 December to 2 January.
Two things follow from that. First, budget for it now, because five days is a sixth of a 30-day allowance and it is the block people forget when they spend everything by June. Second, remember that a lot of Berlin closes anyway in that week, so if you are staying in the city, read what actually shuts in winter before you plan around it.
There is one small piece of good news at the other end. Friday 1 January 2027 is a holiday, so the days you take in late December 2026 stretch further than the ones you take a year later.
Late December in Wilmersdorf. In 2027 this week costs five full leave days, so it is worth deciding early whether you want it.
What I would put in the form
If you are filling in the shared calendar this month, this is the order I would use.
First, Friday 7 May. One day, four off. Ask for it before anyone else does.
Then 9 to 12 March. Four days, nine off, and no school holiday competing for them.
Then one Easter week, not both. Four days buys ten either side of the holiday weekend. Taking both weeks costs eight days for sixteen, which is a worse rate for the same fortnight.
Then Whitsun, 18 to 21 May, if you still have the days and you want May rather than March.
Last, the Christmas week, only if you have deliberately kept five days back for it.
Two rules from the law are worth carrying into that conversation. Your statutory minimum is 24 working days on a six-day week, which works out at 20 days on a normal five-day week, and most Berlin contracts sit between 25 and 30. And leave you have not taken normally has to be used inside the calendar year, with a carry-over to 31 March only in specific cases. The Federal Labour Court ruled in February 2019 that your days do not simply expire unless your employer told you how many you had left and asked you to take them, so if nobody warned you, do not assume the balance is lost.
