Oktoberfest in Berlin 2026: What Is Actually On

Every September someone asks me the same question near Alexanderplatz: "where is the Oktoberfest in Berlin?" In 2026 there is a useful twist. Alexanderplatz itself will host an event called Oktoberfest, so the honest answer is no longer "Berlin does not have one".

The short answer is yes, Berlin has several Oktoberfest-style events. The important second half is that none of them is Munich's Wiesn, the city-defining festival with 14 large tents and millions of visitors. Berlin's versions are smaller, spread across different venues and easy to misunderstand if a search result mixes a beer festival, a funfair and an Oktoberfest tent together.

Here are the confirmed 2026 dates, the locations, what each event actually offers and the simple choice I would make for each kind of trip.

Prater Garten on Kastanienallee is a useful Berlin alternative when the weather allows: long tables under chestnut trees, without pretending to be the Munich Wiesn.

Is there an Oktoberfest in Berlin? Yes, but set expectations correctly

Berlin has a central Oktoberfest on Alexanderplatz, a larger tent event by Spandau Citadel and several other Bavarian-themed nights. They borrow the beer, music, long tables and dress from southern Germany. They do not take over Berlin in the way the Wiesn takes over Munich.

That distinction matters when you plan a trip. If you want a convenient evening after sightseeing, choose Alexanderplatz. If the tent and live-band atmosphere is the main point, choose Spandau. If you care more about independent beer than Bavarian imitation, Berlin Beer Week is the stronger match. If you want the original Oktoberfest, build the trip around Munich.

Munich's Wiesn is the scale visitors usually picture. The banner says "no entry due to overcrowding", a reminder that the original is a separate trip rather than a casual Berlin evening.

Which Oktoberfest events run in Berlin in 2026?

Oktoberfest on Alexanderplatz, 25 September to 4 October 2026

This is the easiest option if you are staying in the centre. The event brings a Paulaner beer garden, live stage entertainment and Bavarian food to Alexanderplatz. Entry is free, so you can look around without committing an entire evening.

• Dates: Friday 25 September to Sunday 4 October 2026.

• Place: Alexanderplatz 3 in Mitte.

• Transport: S-Bahn or U2, U5 and U8 to Alexanderplatz. Trams M2, M4, M5 and M6 also stop around the square.

• My advice: go for an hour after sightseeing, then decide whether the atmosphere is worth staying for. This is the lowest-effort way to answer your own Oktoberfest question.

Oktoberfest at Spandau Citadel, 18 September to 24 October 2026

This is the stronger Berlin choice if you actually want a large tent, long tables and a live band. The tent has more than 2,000 seats, but it does not run every day across the advertised five-week window.

• Dates: Friday 18 September to Saturday 24 October 2026, Fridays and Saturdays only.

• Place: the festival tent beside Spandau Citadel.

• Transport: U7 to Zitadelle; the entrance is a short walk from the station. Night bus N7 and bus X33 also serve the area.

• My advice: reserve or buy the current ticket package through the organizer, and treat this as your evening plan rather than something to drop into between museums.

Berlin Beer Week, 28 August to 6 September 2026

Berlin Beer Week is not an Oktoberfest, and that is exactly why I would choose it if the beer matters more than the costume. It is a citywide programme rather than one fairground: more than 35 events with over 100 participating breweries, including tap takeovers, tastings and six Brews Cruises.

• Dates: Friday 28 August to Sunday 6 September 2026.

• Place: different breweries, bars and boats across Berlin.

• Price: each event has its own ticket or entry arrangement.

• My advice: choose one named event from the programme and book that. Do not travel to a single address expecting a continuous street festival.

Berliner Herbstrummel, 25 September to 25 October 2026

The Berliner Herbstrummel is a separate autumn funfair on the Zentraler Festplatz. It has rides, games and food stands. It should not be presented as Berlin's Oktoberfest, and it should not be merged with the separate Oktoberfest listing at the same fairground whose 2026 dates are still pending.

• Dates: Friday 25 September to Sunday 25 October 2026.

• Place: Zentraler Festplatz, Kurt-Schumacher-Damm 207 in Reinickendorf.

• Transport: bus M21 or X21 to Zentraler Festplatz. Check BVG for the journey from your accommodation.

• My advice: go because you want a funfair. Do not cross the city expecting the Munich Wiesn or a confirmed 2026 Oktoberfest tent.

Use the official Herbstrummel listing for the fair dates. Berlin's separate Kurt-Schumacher-Damm Oktoberfest page still shows no confirmed 2026 date, so I would not plan around it yet.

Why old search results still mention the Karl-Marx-Allee Biermeile

The Internationales Berliner Bierfestival once filled Karl-Marx-Allee with a long line of beer stalls. Its last edition was in 2019, and in February 2020 the organizer announced that it would not continue, a decision recorded in a Berlin House of Representatives written answer. Pages that advertise a new 2026 edition with thousands of beers are recycling the old event's format, not describing a confirmed current festival.

The next two photographs are kept as archive context because they explain why the old claim still looks believable. They do not show a current 2026 event or current prices.

Munich Oktoberfest, 19 September to 4 October 2026

Munich Oktoberfest runs from Saturday 19 September to Sunday 4 October 2026 on the Theresienwiese. It is the 191st edition and the only event in this article that is the original Wiesn.

The fastest direct trains between Berlin and Munich can take around four hours, but schedules and fares vary. Eight hours on trains makes it a poor spontaneous day trip. If Oktoberfest is the reason for your holiday, sleep in Munich and use the official Oktoberfest site to check tent opening times, reservations and the seats kept available without reservations. If you only want a train day out from Berlin, Potsdam and the other day trips are a better use of the day.

What to drink in Berlin: Berliner Weisse

For a drink with a real Berlin connection, order a Berliner Weisse mit Schuss. It is a tart wheat beer served with raspberry syrup, which turns it red, or woodruff syrup, which turns it green. It is usually low in alcohol and arrives in a wide bowl-shaped glass.

It is not a substitute for Oktoberfest beer. It is simply a local drink that gives you a better sense of Berlin than ordering a litre of Bavarian lager because you happen to be in Germany in September.

Berliner Weisse mit Schuss: raspberry is red and woodruff is green. Order it by colour if the German is not cooperating.

Where I send people outside the event dates

Berlin's beer gardens are seasonal and weather-dependent, so check the opening hours on the day. These three are practical rather than obscure:

• Prater Garten, Kastanienallee 7-9 in Prenzlauer Berg. Long benches under chestnut trees; U2 to Eberswalder Straße.

• Café am Neuen See, inside Tiergarten beside the lake. Rowing boats in season and Bavarian food; S-Bahn or U-Bahn to Zoologischer Garten, then walk through the park.

• Zollpackhof, Elisabeth-Abegg-Straße 1 near Hauptbahnhof. Augustiner beer with the Chancellery across the Spree.

How this fits a day in the centre

If your dates overlap the Alexanderplatz event, keep the plan simple: see the historic centre first, then return to the square for the early evening. If you choose Spandau, protect the whole evening for it and check that your date is a Friday or Saturday. For Beer Week, book one event and build the rest of the day around its actual address.
