Germany has strict Sunday closing laws — the Ladenschlussgesetz — and Berlin follows them. Most supermarkets, fashion stores, electronics shops, and pharmacies are closed all day Sunday. For tourists arriving on Sunday afternoon and hoping to grab dinner ingredients, water, or last-minute items, this can derail the day. The good news is the workarounds are real and reliable. Train stations like Hauptbahnhof, Ostbahnhof, and Friedrichstraße have full supermarkets open Sundays. BER airport runs 24/7 retail. Späti corner shops stay open late selling beer, snacks, and basics. Every restaurant, museum, and café operates as usual. Berlin doesn't shut down on Sundays — it just shifts where commerce happens. This tool shows you where to go and what each spot actually stocks.

How to Use This Tool

The map shows every Sunday-open shopping option across central Berlin: supermarkets, train stations, airports, gas stations, and Späti corner shops. Each marker indicates what's available (full groceries, snacks, alcohol, hot food) and current hours. Use it whenever you arrive on a Sunday or realize mid-Sunday you forgot something at the supermarket Saturday night.

The German Sunday Rule (Ladenschlussgesetz)

Sunday closing in Germany is older than the country itself — rooted in religious tradition, then preserved by labor laws protecting workers' weekly rest. Most retail stores cannot legally open. The exceptions are for travelers, emergencies, and specific tourist-zone Sundays approved annually by the city government. The law isn't "Berlin closing early" — it's a real legal constraint, and you'll see staff politely shaking heads at locked supermarket doors with the same regularity locals do.

What's Actually Open

  • Train station supermarkets: Hauptbahnhof has a REWE open daily including Sundays. Ostbahnhof, Friedrichstraße, Zoologischer Garten, and Südkreuz all have similar setups. Full grocery stock, slightly higher prices than regular branches.

  • BER airport: 24/7 retail, food, and pharmacies. If you're arriving Sunday with checked bags, grab essentials before leaving.

  • Späti corner shops: Berlin has 800+ Spätis (short for Spätkauf, "late buy"). Open evenings and Sundays, they sell drinks, snacks, basic groceries, beer, and cigarettes. The vibe is small bodega, not supermarket. Cash often preferred.

  • Gas stations: Snacks, drinks, and basics until late or 24/7. Pricier than a Späti but more reliable on hours.

  • Restaurants and cafés: Open as usual, often busier than weekdays. Brunch culture is strong in Berlin Sundays.

  • Museums and galleries: Open. Many have free entry on the first Sunday of each month at federal museums.

The Special Sundays — Verkaufsoffener Sonntag

Berlin allows roughly 8 to 10 Sundays per year where regular shops can open by special permit. These are called Verkaufsoffener Sonntag ("open shopping Sunday") and are usually tied to seasonal events: Christmas markets, fashion weeks, summer festivals. Dates change each year. If you're visiting on one of these dates, central streets like Kurfürstendamm, Friedrichstraße, and Hackescher Markt come alive with full shopping. Check the city's tourism site for the specific 2026 dates before counting on them.

Sunday Routines That Work for Tourists

  • Stock up Saturday evening. Supermarkets are open until 10 PM most Saturdays. A 15-minute REWE trip Saturday night spares you the Sunday hunt.

  • Use Sunday for sightseeing. Most major attractions are open. Sunday is actually one of the busiest days for tourist-area cafés.

  • Grab brunch. Berlin Sunday brunch is excellent and a local ritual. Spots in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Kreuzberg fill up fast — go early or book ahead.

  • Spätis are your safety net. Even at 11 PM Sunday, you can find a Späti within walking distance for drinks, chocolate, and basic dinner ingredients.
