Berlin Water Hardness: What Your Postcode Says About the Scale in Your Kettle

There is a moment every Berlin household knows: you tip the kettle to pour, and a small white flake lands in the tea. The crust comes back a week after you scrubbed it, the shower glass in the corner is turning cloudy again, and the third cheap kettle in two years has just started rattling. None of that means your flat has bad water. It means your flat has Berlin water, and Berlin water is officially hard everywhere in town.

The useful part, and the part most people never look up, is that it is not equally hard everywhere. Your postcode has its own official numbers, and once you know them, the fixes cost a few euros a year.

How hard is Berlin water, really

German water law sorts tap water into three classes: soft below 8,4 °dH, medium from 8,4 to 14, and hard above 14 °dH. The unit, German degrees of hardness, measures dissolved calcium and magnesium.

Berlin does not flirt with the boundary. The city's nine waterworks delivered between 15,1 °dH (Spandau) and 23,3 °dH (Wuhlheide) as their 2025 annual median values, so every single one pumps hard water. At street level the spread is even wider: the official per-postcode ranges run from 10,3 up to 25,7 °dH, and every one of Berlin's 190 postcodes carries the classification hart (3).

The pattern across the map is real, not noise:

  • The west and northwest run softest. Around Wedding and Reinickendorf the network range is roughly 14,0 to 15,7 °dH, fed mostly by the Tegel and Stolpe works.

  • The east and southeast run hardest. Parts of Köpenick, Lichtenberg and Marzahn sit at 18,6 to 25,7 °dH, close to the Wuhlheide, Kaulsdorf and Friedrichshagen works.

  • The centre swings. Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln get blended water from several works, so their official ranges are wide, often 14 to 21 °dH and beyond.

That difference is not academic. A kettle in Friedrichshagen scales visibly faster than the same kettle in Spandau, and a dishwasher set for the wrong hardness leaves cloudy glasses no matter which tabs you buy.

Berlin water hardness by postcode

Berliner Wasserbetriebe publishes analysis values for every postcode, but they sit behind a German-language lookup most people never find. I pulled the current values for all 190 Berlin postcodes into the map below. Type your postcode or tap your area, read your range, and take the settings that follow.

If you want the source itself, the official lookup is on the Berliner Wasserbetriebe postcode page, and the per-waterworks annual values are in the BWB analysis data PDF. The network blends water from several works depending on demand, which is why your postcode shows a range and why the tap can drift inside it through the year.

The two numbers that matter

The lookup gives you two hardness figures, and they answer two different questions.

Total hardness (Gesamthärte) is all the dissolved calcium and magnesium. It decides your dishwasher setting and how much detergent a load of laundry needs.

Carbonate hardness (Karbonathärte) is the share bound to carbonate, typically 9 to 16 °dH in Berlin, and it is the part that turns into scale when water is heated. Your kettle crust is calcium carbonate coming out of solution at the heating element. It is a mineral deposit, not dirt, and it forms faster the hotter the surface gets.

If you see hardness given in millimoles per litre on a detergent pack, one °dH is about 0,18 mmol/l, so Berlin's range of roughly 10 to 26 °dH translates to about 1,8 to 4,6 mmol/l.

The settings that actually follow

This is the part worth doing once and then forgetting. My advice: stop treating limescale as a cleaning problem and treat it as a settings problem.

  • Dishwasher: open the settings and set the water hardness to the upper end of your postcode's range, then keep the regenerating salt topped up even if your tabs claim salt is built in. In most of Berlin that means a setting for roughly 16 to 25 °dH. The built-in softener only works when the salt chamber is full, and it is the single change that ends cloudy glasses.

  • Washing machine: dose detergent from the hard water column on the pack, the one usually marked above 14 °dH or 2,5 mmol/l. Hard water binds part of the detergent before it can clean, so the soft-water dose washes worse and leaves grey residue. Separate softener powders are unnecessary once you dose for hard water.

  • Kettle and coffee machine: buy citric acid (Zitronensäure) from any drugstore, a kilo costs a few euros and lasts a year. Dissolve two tablespoons in the kettle with water, heat it briefly, let it sit half an hour, rinse twice. With daily use, plan on doing this roughly monthly, and faster than that east of the Spree. Vinegar works too but leaves plastic kettles smelling.

  • Shower glass and taps: the cloudy film wipes off with the same citric acid solution or a splash of vinegar on a cloth. It returns on a rhythm set by your °dH, which is why the same cleaning habit produces different results in different districts.

  • Espresso machines: the one appliance where hardness genuinely costs money. Scale kills heating blocks, and repairs cost more than years of filters. If you own a machine you care about, use a filter cartridge or filtered water and descale on the manufacturer's schedule using your real local hardness, not the default.

What you can skip: whole-flat softening systems, magnet gadgets and most filter jugs bought for safety reasons. For a rental kitchen the settings above do the same job for a fraction of the cost.

Is hard water bad for you

No. The hardness is calcium and magnesium, the same minerals you would otherwise buy in tablets, and a litre of Berlin tap water carries around 100 to 140 mg of calcium depending on the zone. Berlin's drinking water is controlled under the German drinking water ordinance, the published lead values at the network are far below the limit, and hardness says nothing about pollution. The water is also delivered without chlorine in normal operation, which is why it does not taste like a swimming pool.

Drink it, make tea with it, give it to your kids. The kettle suffers so you do not have to. And if you are out in the city, the free drinking fountains run the same controlled water.

One honest footnote: if your building is old and never renovated, any metal taste or concern is about the house plumbing after the meter, not about what BWB delivers. The utility's published values describe the network; the last metres belong to the landlord.

Why Berlin water is this hard

Berlin drinks its own ground. The waterworks pump regional groundwater and bank filtrate, water that has spent months seeping through the glacial sand and gravel this city is built on, dissolving calcium out of the sediment on the way. Nothing is imported from mountain reservoirs, and the works remove iron and manganese but deliberately do not soften the water.

You can stand in front of this system's history. The Friedrichshagen waterworks by the Müggelsee, opened in 1893, still anchors the supply of the east and keeps its cathedral-like nineteenth-century machine halls by the lake. The fat brick water tower on Knaackstraße in Prenzlauer Berg, finished in 1877 as Berlin's oldest, stored exactly this hard water for the tenement kitchens around it. The hardness in your kettle is the same geology those buildings were built to move.

That also explains the map: the eastern works draw from the Müggelsee basin and run hardest, the northwestern works around Tegel run noticeably softer, and the pipes in between blend whatever the day's demand requires.

My advice for this autumn

Heating season is when the kettle, the boiler and the tea consumption all work hardest, so do the ten-minute version now. Look up your postcode in the map above, set the dishwasher to the top of your range and fill the salt, and put a kilo of citric acid in the cupboard. Then the subject is closed until spring, whatever your postcode says.
